TRADITIONAL AND GUIDED WALK EVENTS
Please check Meetup.com/south-sound-walkers to find our next traditional event.
Everyone is welcome at all of our events!
All must register, sign and return a start card. You don't need to join anything to participate. All our events are free. But we appreciate and encourage donations to help defray the cost of putting on walks. Costs include start locations, permits, national organization sanction fees, portable toilets, copies of walk directions, candy or snacks, or equipment.
Many walkers participate in the award program of the International organization. It's a great way to keep track of walks and reward yourself for keeping active. If you keep IVV Event and Distance books, you pay $3 to get the event and distance sanction stamps in your record books. Record books are available at all traditional and guided walk events. New Walker packets are available and someone at the event can help get you started on the credit walking program. If you are a member of Daffodil Valley Volkssport Association you pay only $2 to get IVV stamps for our year round or seasonal walks. Sometimes walks have awards for finishing or hatpins that you purchase. Click Here for more information about walking with the American Volkssport Association.
Traditional (Staffed) Events are those held on a particular day, usually on weekends, and are hosted by clubs. Clubs make the arrangements for facilities, permits, porta-potties, water and whatever else is necessary to make an event a success. The club usually marks the walk route with colored arrows and/or ribbons. or may provide a map and written directions. Walkers may start anytime within the time window and must finish by a specified time, but walk at their own pace. Checkpoints along the route provide safety and water. Walks are of varying difficulty, and are rated 1-5 to let you know what to expect. Click Here for the trail rating system, which is the same for all volkssport events.
Guided Walks: Guides lead the group along the route. All walkers register and start at the same time, but walk at their own pace, so there may be more than one group walking at different speeds and someone bringing up the end. Directions and/or maps are usually provided.
